I applied to Google Teacher Academy in Mountain View, California. My interim principal, Sr. Margaret, convinced me to do it at about 4pm on May 14th, about eight hours before the deadline. I created my video first, and I basically used Camtasia with Google Presentation and a ton of photos from the past year. You can see the video here. Next, I carefully filled out the online application, and I hit the submit button. Invitations would be sent in a week for the selected cohort.
Fast forward to May 21st. I was returning from a meeting with the administrative leadership team at my school and rushed to my classroom to teach my class. The French teacher was watching my class for me when I walked in, and my students greeted me with smiles. One of my students told me she had sent me an email regarding her Diva Dialogue project, and she was hoping for a little help. I took my phone out and waited for my emails to download.
I answered her questions, and as I scrolled through the other messages, I noticed one from an account called gteachers. I quickly popped it open and let out a slight scream. My students all looked up from their devices, and I may or may not have yelled, “I got in! I got in!” One of my Divas, Amanda, ran up to hug me since she knew exactly what that meant.
She told the rest of the class, “Mrs. DeLapo just got into Google Teacher Academy!” Google Teacher Academy will be June 30-31st, 2014, and it will be at the Googleplex in Mountain View.
